one Friday after noon, my best friend "Luka Samman" and i were in absolute hangover, boredom and costumes and props from "the last night's performance" so we decided to just get the creative weel running, we were playing "Charles Aznavour - Comme ils disent" and the photos developed into this combination of the limitations of performers, to the "after party", the bling bling, darkness of backstage, chains of our beloved city.

Do you remember your first bike ride?!

Some of us took the easy way to learning, they really wanted to learn! Installed the helper wheels, and their ride was so self-indulging like "Wow. I Am riding a bike! I didn’t fall- I got something to talk about in class on Sunday" the parents watched, clapped and were so proud of their kid! Two weekends after, the helper wheels are UN-installed, the following summer, they received a bigger bike..

While others, didn’t settle for helper wheels, they believed they're grown ups, they either do it all the way themselves, or they just don’t do it at all! The parents approve stand their and watch their kid, leaning on walls, stopping and using their legs while riding that bike. What a hassle! The kid falls, tries again, and then falls and break the leg he leaned on! Grows fear of riding bikes, and decides to buy a video game, or maybe a Barbie doll!

Now let's cut it short with bikes, childhood problems and subliminal wisdom!

Life is a circle, and all of its incidents are somehow connected and similar, a simple bike ride of a 7 year old can be so similar to an adult taking decision of his/her career, and lifestyle approach, even relationships. Is it the human nature! The stubborn man kind? Has to try in order to learn

I never installed helper wheels, I wanted to try things on my own! I didn’t keep in mind the consequences. Riding THAT bike was my passion, stubborn stubborn me fell down and hurt himself! And you know?! I kind of hate bikes now! I'll just watch those riding bikes! and move along...

I've always wondered

How would it be like? How would I be like?

Between psychology , genetics and the culture of taboos and shame we stumble upon plenty of Maybe-like-answers, probabilities, theories, and unfinished researches.

And so far , my questions were not fully answered

Therefore I decided to run a personal – bilingual - research To answer my questions. And during the almost one month residency I was in the brain-storming phase of my research, gathering sources, talking to people, coming up of an appropriate approach. And on the side of this research was the artistic side of it. Is how to link/and display my texts with the toys.

And an open-studio event was organized by Makan to mark the end of our residency.

On display was an abstract, symbolic installation to visualize the stages of the brain storming which is the first step in this on going project. An attempt to explain and understand the terms ( sexual identity, sexual orientation and sexual education ) in three pieces.

Lucky me ! this is the second year in a row that am taking a part of Shatana Artist workshop thats held in the beautiful small village called Shatana in the north of Jordan,for on-site-documentation and artist assistant : ) such a great experience

Shatana, International Artist Workshop3 invites you to the Open Day celebrating the two week workshop which takes place in Shatana village for the third year in a row, it includes 21 artists from around the world. This event presents work in progress done during the workshop approaching various issues, themes and materials projecting the artists’ experiences in the workshop and their interaction with the people of the village. Furthermore, the workshop is process oriented and encourages experimentation and interactive art work. The visitors can tour the village to look at the works placed in various locations. This workshop is an initiative organised by 3 Jordanian artists in collaboration with Makan, it is part of the Triangle Arts Trust web of workshops active for over 25 years around the world.

Shatana Workshop 2009 work group ??

Hanan Khalil: Holds a BA in fine arts for Yarmouk University, she participated in various exhibitions and workshops and is an Arts teacher.

Ola Khalidi: Holds a master’s degree in management, she established and runs Makan since 2003, an independent art space focused on contemporary practices.

Samah Hijawi: Holds a master’s degree in arts, she has experience in painting, installation and public interventions.

Diala Khasawnih: with a background in architecture, she has experience in painting and installation as well as writing and translation.

Rafique Nasereddin: a team member in Makan ,an artist assistant and is an experimental digital and performing artist

Shatana International Artist Workshop3 ? what ? when ? where ? how ? when ?!

Shatana, International Artist Workshop is an initiative organised by a group of Jordanian visual artists in collaboration with Makan, the team comprises this year of Ola Khalidi, Diala Khasawnih, Samah Hijawi, Hanan Khalil and Rafiq Naseriddin. The workshop follows the Triangle Arts Trust model of artist led workshops active for over 25 years around the world. It aims at creating an atmosphere for interaction and collaborative work between mid career artists. The search for a location lead to a meeting with Father Imad Twal who welcomed the team and offered the Latin Church grounds in Shatana which became the workshop’s home since the first edition in summer of 2007.

The workshop set up encourages interaction and communication with the environment and its people, their livelihoods and concerns which reflects on the subjects approached by the artists in their works. The artists reside in houses in the village; the workshop employs local skills and services as well as the use of local facilities and material and investing immediately in the village and near by town of Huson.

The workshop, in its third edition this year, announced a call for application in March, hundreds of applications came in from around the world. The participating team was announced in May inviting 21 artists from 16 different countries to work and exchange ideas and experiences for the duration of two weeks. The workshop aims at bringing together artists who have a diverse experience in art practices, focuses on the art process itself and supports experimentation in ideas and media.

The workshop concludes with an Open Day on Friday the 17^th July to celebrate the results of the workshop culminating in art works in progress, the works vary in themes, media and material including forms such as painting, drawing, installation and video. The Day starts at 4:00pm and ends at 8:00pm taking the visitors on a tour of the village to see the art works placed in different locations. Transport is available from Amman and back.

The workshop was realised with the support of Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development, Ms. Hala Hijazi, Pan Arab, Latin Church in Shatana, Ford Foundation, Safar Fund, Blue Fig, Saachi and Saachi, The British Council, The French Cultural Centre, Goethe Institute, The National Gallery for Fine Arts, Darat al Funun, The Ahliyyeh School for Girls, Mint Advertising, Al Ghad Newspaper and Zumot.

During her residency the Dutch artist Su Tomesen noticed that there are a lot of English words that starts with the "T" letter that are or might be related to palestine,so she sent out a list of words ,and asked the people to pick (a) word(s) and use it to tell a story, or share a thought that is related to his/her history regarding the T-word and Palestine.

and as a result :

1-The texts collected were displayed as a part of Su's installation,

2-a performance of live music played by Shu Hal Ayyam accompanied with Su reading the T-words and Rafique Nasereddin, Reading the collected stories. and that should start at 7:00 in the opening night

3-the T-words as a sound installation that puts you in the right atmosphere to sit down and write your own story during the exhibit..

And Aramram TV were there to cover this event, and made such a beautiful video that I felt like sharing.

But today he lay there in the dirt face down crying one more time..."Mom, Dad...help me!" Nobody was there to hear his final cry

Hakaya - The scent of my homeland

March 2008...when I first walked in to albalad theatre I found a group of very nice loving parents to a small beautiful baby named Hakaya

I was introduced to this great child, and in like an hour I was totally in love.

a couple of days after i was there...in the center of this parade of storytellers, artists, performers, organizers and volunteers. we spent one of the most amazing weeks of my life...this year...late February 2009 and first of march i was there...i was there in the process of delivering this baby to life... Amazing experience that I felt like sharing !

There was Praline the sweetest Lebanese French lady that happens to be one of my idols and the people I look up to theatrically , her passion, and humanity is just overwhelming and soothing and made an impact on my Ammanie hectic daily life. And then comes Denise, with her motherly love and beautiful spirit ,she carries the scent of our homeland, our Palestine in her outfits, words, laughter and stories . Then you come across an ever young Egyptian lady, Arfa , one of the most unique humorous people you might ever meet, when she tells her stories, we laugh, and then again we stop and stare in how talented and special this woman is. Those are only 3 ladies of so many other participating artists. But those are the dearest to my heart. And of course, you wouldn’t imagine how magical it was meeting the new comers to the festival, new faces…This year, one of my favorite friends Toleen Touq decided to step in and work as the project coordinator, adds more fun and love to the whole experience, Toleen did an amazing job…she was very inspiring and motivated.*Thumbs up for Toleen* Another unique character was Dina…our beautiful diva. she is one of the reasons that kept us all going…her smile and playful yet efficient character was outstanding. Raed, what can I possibly say about Raed ? this man I hold so much respect to, hes the manager of Albalad Theatre, very special man that sometime I feel he's like a god-father to us. And Serene, an outstanding lady, Mais was also a new face to me, very nice person. Now comes Suad, what a sweetheart ! a hardworking dedicated lady, with huge amounts of love to the theatre and to Hakaya. I hope I didn’t forget anybody ! you all were fantastic.

Oh! A couple of more faces were also very interesting and left an impact in our hearts J George & Raneen ,a very cute Palestinian couple…young spirits and very sweet people, very talented and touching. I found myself very attracted to them, probably cause they also had the scent of my homeland…those people I will never forget, I just hold so much respect to them…

Then comes the energetic Lebanese Fares & Zaina…those guys are just fantastic, we became friends in no time…hopefully we'll see them again

Hmmmm…who else ?

I wish I can write about each and every person I met in this festival, they are too many and I can keep on writing for ages about them…

The Launch of the Hakaya Festival (9 -15 April)

On 9 April, the Al Balad theatre, under the patronage of his Excellency Mayor of Amman Engineer Omar Al Ma'ani, will inaugurate the second edition of the Hakaya festival organized this year as part of the Amman Municipality Centennial Celebrations. The festival is organized in Amman on an annual basis since 2008 in partnership with the Amman municipality, the Arab Education Forum, the Arab Theatre Training Centre, the Swedish Drama Institute and the French Cultural Centre in Amman.

The festival is part of an Arab initiative with a Mediterranean dimension- HAKAYA- whose mission is to reclaim the centrality of storytelling in learning, art and life. Within this same momentum organizations like the Tamer Institution for Community Education in Palestine will organize its annual reading and storytelling week between April 1^st and April 7^th, and Al Jana in Lebanon will organize their Janana reading week between April 12^th and April 19^th.

The festival will open with an artistic performance entitled A Letter to…by El-Funoun Palestinian dance group that consists of eight tableaux inspired by the drawings of Palestinian Caricaturist Naji Al Ali, in addition to Palestinian folkloric dance segments.

The festival also hosts renowned Lebanese director Rojer Assaf, whose name has been synonymous with Lebanese Theatre for the past 30 years. His play Fatima's Gate showcases the atrocious war waged against Lebanon in 2006, and is now considered a visual and oral record that documents the victims’ stories, and the destruction that befell Lebanon during that period.

The performances during the seven day event will be held at different cultural venues and governorates around the Kingdom.

The festival's program also includes storytelling performances by Denise Assad and Raneen Basharat from Palestine; Sayed Ragab and Arefa Abd Al Rasoul from Egypt; Al Madinah Theatre Group from Morocco; Lara Naser from Jordan; and Praline Gay-Para from France.

In addition to the above activities there will be two workshops, the first one facilitated by Denise Assad to encourage parents to connect with their children through storytelling, and the second one by Praline Gay-Para to develop storytelling skills amongst young budding storytellers from Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.

Writer and artist Noora Ameen, from Egypt will present her Alexandria based program “Our Stories” to Jordanians who wish to share their personal and collective stories at Gallery Adraj.

There will also be two movie screenings: Fernando Meirelles's Cidade De Deus (City of God) and Sandra Madi's Perforated Memory.

A round table discussion that celebrates oral societies will bring together storytelling and theatre artists, educators, and researchers in the field. Ammani Stories is another activity that will bring together Jordanian architects in an innovative discussion on the stories behind the architectural structure of a city like Amman. There will also be a meeting about training in the performing arts in Palestine.

A book fair organized by Azkadunya will offer people an array of books about storytelling and biographies, as well as the opportunity to buy and sign the recent bilingual book If I Had the Choice (Arabic/English) by Dr. Faihaa AbdulHadi. Al Hadi's book chronicles Palestinian women’s of daily life during years 2002 to 2003 of the second Intifada.

A Pebble by the Sea, the chronicle of the first year in the life of HAKAYA project narrated by Munir Fasheh and others will be available for sale and signing, along with the matching film, on the opening day.

The vision of HAKAYA maintains that writing, reading, and literacy are tools that help develop the intrinsic world within a person’s mind and imagination. Writing, reading, and literacy constitute the fabric that weaves the social and cultural network between people. Through the Hakaya festival, writing, reading and literacy will not only be viewed as tools that connect the mind with the text but also tools that connect the mind with life itself.

The Hakaya Festival partners in 2009 are the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the Royal Film Commission, Ruwwad Association, Gallery Adraj, and The Dukes' Diwan.

يقدّم المعرض أعمال فيديو وتجهيز استوحتها سو تومسين أثناء الإقامة الفنية التي قضتها في عمّان تستكشف مفاهيم مثل الهويّة والانتماء في السياق المحلي. بالرغم من أنّ ثلاثة شهور هي فترة قصيرة، إلاّ أن الفرصة سمحت للفنانة بالعيش في عمّان وأن تمشي في شوارعها وتقابل الناس وتشاركهم قصصهم الشخصيّة. بعد بعض من الوقت، وبعد الكثير من السفر، أدركت مدى حضور فلسطين في حياة الناس اليوميّة في عمّان وسوريا ولبنان وسلطنة عُمان، خارج فلسطين الجغرافيّة ذاتها. ساهمت الحرب الأخيرة في غزّة بشكل مرير في إقامتها الفنيّة. وجدت نفسها وجها لوجه مع ما يعرف بالقضيّة الفلسطينيّة. أصبحت شاهدة عيان للأوضاع الدراميّة وتعرّفت لوسائل الإعلام في العالم العربي والأهم من ذلك أنّها رأت كيفيّة تعامل الناس مع الأمر برمّته.

تتناول أعمالها كلمتي هنا وهناك ومعانيهما السياسيّة في سياق المنطقة. لعلّ هنا ليس أمرا ثابتا ولكن هل هناك خيار وارد؟ أم هل يبقى هناك أمرا مثاليا بعيد المنال؟

تعيش سو تومسين وتعمل في أمستردام في هولندا. إقامتها الفنيّة في مكان مدعومة من قبل المؤسسة الهولنديّة بي كي في بي. غالبا ما تتناول أعمالها، الفيديو والصور الفوتوغرافيّة والتجهيز، أوضاعا في المساحة العامّة وتنطلق من سياق المحل أو الحالة المباشرة.

The exhibition presents works inspired by Su Tomesen’s residency period in Amman exploring concepts such as identity and belonging within the local context. Although three months is a short period of time, the artist had the chance to live in Amman, walk its streets, meet people and share their personal stories. After some time, and after quite a bit of travel, she realized how immediate Palestine was in the daily life of people in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Oman, outside of geographic Palestine itself. The recent war in Gaza contributed bitterly to her residence. She came face to face with what is known as ‘The Palestinian Cause.’ She became witness to the drama and exposed to the media in the Arab World, more importantly, she became aware of the way people deal with it all.

Su Tomesen lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her residence at Makan is funded by the Dutch BKVB foundation. Her videos, photos and installations often deal with situations in public space and originate from the context of a given situation or location.

هذا رد على المقالة المنشورة يوم الخميس 13 تشرين ثاني 2008 بعنوان " حملة ملاحقة المثليين: دعوات لتفحص الظاهرة." شاكرتا لكم نشره.

لقد كتبتم في مقدمة المقالة أن المثليين" مشكلة" وعلينا حلها، إلا أنهم ليسوا كذلك، المشكلة هي المجتمع المنغلق على نفسه والمتدينون والذين يهابون أي شيء مختلف عنهم أو الذين يرون أنفسهم كمثليين ويهابون ما يرون. المثلييون هم أفراد مثل غيرهم ولديهم حقوق ومشاعر وآمال وأحلام. هم ليسوا مشكلة تستدعي حلا. الأمر الذي نحتاج معالجته هو تحيز المجتمع وكراهيته لمجموعة معينة من الناس، هذا الإضطهاد الأشبه بالتحيز ضد السود والعرب في الولايات الأمريكية فقط لانهم أقليات.

أما بالنسبة للدكتور محمد الحباشنة الذي عليه أن يقرأ كتابا واحدا في الطب والعلم النفسي بعد تاريخ تخرجه الجامعي في السبعينات ليعرف أن المثلية قد أزيلت من لائحة الأمراض النفسية من منظمة الطب النفسي الأمريكية في 15 كانون أول 1973 ومن منظمة العلم النفسي الأمريكية في كانون ثاني 1975 وليس في أوائل التسعينات. ولذلك أكرر أن المثلية ليست بمرض نفسي ولذلك لا يمكن معالجتها بأي وسيلة كانت. إن المثليين ليسوا مريضين نفسيا انما سيحتاجون إلى علاج نفسي بسبب الإضطهاد الذين يعيشونه من قبل صحافتنا الأردنية المقدرة ومجتمعنا المتحفظ.

أما الناشطة الحقوقية هنزاد التل فقد بدأت ردّها على طريق منطقي حيث قالت أن المثليين يجب أن لا يعاملوا على أساس أنهم مجرمون أو مذنبون، ثم ضلت الطريق عندما تبعت هذه الجملة بأخرى تدعي فيها أن المثليين هم ضحايا لمعاملة خاطئة أو لاعتداء في صغرهم وأنهم يقلدون النساء بسبب شعورهم بالحاجه للرعاية والاهتمام. "الناشطة" التل هي رئيسة جمعية حقوق الطفل الأردنية وليست خبيرة علم نفس أو حتى ناشطة في حقوق الإنسان بشكل عام أو المثليين بشكل خاص، لذلك لديها عذر الجهل في هذا الموضوع، إلا أن نقطة نقاشها يقلل من معنوية النساء وتجعلهن أفراد همهم الأول السعي إلى الرعاية والإهتمام وأيضا تحرم الرجال حاجتهم الطبيعية وحقهم في الحصول على الرعاية والإهتمام. وإضافة إلى ذلك فهي تزيد الطين بللا بقولها أن المثليين أشخاص "غير طبيعيين يحتاجون لمعاملة من نوع آخر، ليتمكنوا من تحسين أوضاعهم والعودة إلى المجتمع بصورة صحيحة" فهذه طريقة معاملة الأفراد الذين قضوا وقت طويلا في السجن أو جنود حرب وليست طريقا معاملة أفراد أصحاء يعانون فقط وجودهم وعيشهم في مجتمع منغلق لا انساني.

وتستمراللامنطقية حتى في خاتمة المقالة بالقول ان المثليية ظاهرة تحتاج لدراسة علمية عميقة لمعرفة سبب "تنامي وجود هؤلاء." والحقيقة أن العالم قد قام بهذه "الدراسة العلمية" وانتقلوا منها إلى أشياء أخرى ومن رأي أن ننتقل نحن أيضا إلى مواضيع أخرى. المثليية ليست بظاهرة (التسونامي والإنتشار الزائد للغباء ظواهر) وأن المثليين قد قطعوا شوطا في الدفاع والمحاربة من أجل حقوقهم. لذلك وبدلا من أن نعيد الكرة، علينا أن نبدء من المكان الحالي الذي وصل إليه المثلييون الآن، لا أن نتراجع إلى الوراء.

وأخيرا، علي أن أعترف أنني كنت أتوقع من "السّجل" مستوى أعلى من الصدق والكيان الصحفي، ولكن يبدو أنني أخطئت. كل ما عليكم أن تفعلوه هو بعض من البحث للتأكد من الأرقام والتوايخ وتصحيح الأقوال والمعتقدات الخاطئة بدلا من أن تكتبوا مقالات تشويقية لاتبت للصحافة بشيء، فقط لبيع أعداد أكبر من الجرائد.

غيبة الروح ... ظهور الجسد

عندما وصل في تلك الليلة إلى ذلك الملهى، أثار انتباه الجميع، لا يملك تلك الهيبة المخيفة، لكنه يملك ذلك الحضور الطاغي والعاصف، ذو إطلالة جميلة، وجسد يشتهي الحياة كأنه خلق في لحظة وصل فيها الجمال إلى قمة التجلي، يشبه الآلهة القديمة في إطلالته، ذو بهاء نقي ومطلق، خاصة وهو يرتدي ذلك القميص ذو اللون الأرجواني، بدا في منتهى الأناقة، حليق الرأس، يرتدي في أذنه قرطا صغيرا، دخل مزهوا بروحه النقية، بدا ذلك جليا في عينيه، لم يكن يدرك أحد أن سر جماله يكمن في روحه، فملامحه عادية، لكنه يمتلك ذلك الوهج في عينيه، كان آيات النور قد تم اختصارها في تلك العينين، عندما تراهما تغفر له ما لا تغفره للآخرين، يباح له ما لا يباح للآخرين، دخل إلى الملهى وكأن الجميع في خلق من أجل فرصة لقاءه في تلك الليلة .

عندما اخذت تتعالى الموسيقى اخذ هو يبث الحياة في جسده، ويرقص في حالة تشبه الصلاة، كأن ما يمارسه من رقص طقسا دينيا قديما، يصفي الروح ويعطي العالم مسحة جديدة من الحب، لم يكن رقصه مبتذلا، بل كان آية من آيات الجمال، كان يعرف أن يزداد جمالا كلما رقص، وكان يعرف ان الجميع ينظر إليه بتلك النظره الشهوانية، الجميع يتتبعه ويشتهي أن يمتلك هذا الجسد، وتلك الحياة التي تنبض في كل مفصل منه، طبعا لم يكن ذلك مستهجنا، فهو احد أشهر الراقصين المحترفين في عمّان، وفي كل حركة يسمعك قصيدة نابضة بالحياة، وفي كل التفاتة يختصر الحياة بنغم جميل يسكن إلى القلب.

ينهي صلاته ويتهافت الجميع إليه، أحدهم يطمع في صداقته، وبعضهم يغريه السحر فيصبو لاكتشافه، وبعضهم تعتريه تلك الشهوة الحيوانية في معرفة تفاصيل الجسد، ويغيب عن أذهانهم أن جمال جسده يكمن في الروح التي تسكنه، تدلل عليهم قليلا، تجاذب اطراف الحديث مع هذا وتلك، ومنح قبلة لهذه الصبية، وتلمس شعر تلك الفتاة، غمز لذلك الشاب، وضحك في وجه الآخر، فهو يملك ذلك الذكاء الاجتماعي الذي يملك به الجميع، وكانهم مجموعة من الخواتم يرتديهم وقتما يشاء وينزعهم كلما شاء، ولم يكن واحدا بالنسبة له خاتما ذهبيا، كلهم كانوا عبارة عن خواتم رخيصة، لكنه يستمتع بارتداء تلك الخواتم... وبارتداء اولئك الناس..... هو فقط كان يبدو كالماسة النفيسة، مشع وباهظ الثمن، لا يناله أحد.... لم يكن يهتم لأمر احد ولكن لا أحد لايهتم لأمره، فالجميع يحيطونه طوال الوقت، لا يملك وقتا خاصا ليفكر إن كان يحتاج لأحد منهم.

قلنا أنه يشبه الآلهة، لكنه من آلهة الليل، يقضي وقته بين المراقص والملاهي، يعرف ان معابده تمتلأ بسدنتها في الليل فقط، وقبل دخوله إلى عالم الليل ينظر إلى مرآته فتمنحه ذلك التألق اليومي والسحر الجميل الذي لا يناله سواه، وكلما وقف أمامها رأى ذلك الجسد الذي ينطق بالحياة، ولم يلتفت يوما إلى روحه وما شتشهيه من هذه الحياة، ربما لأنه يتصرف كالآهة والآلهة لا يحق لها التفكير بذاتها،ن عليها أن تفكر بمتعة الآخرين وتحقيق رغباتهم، وربما تعذيبهم أيضا. عدا أنه في تلك الليلة التفت إلى احدهم، شعر أن هذا الشخص قد تلمس ما ينبض بين جوانحيه، وهذا الوجه ليس كباقي الوجوه التي يراها كل ليلة ، فهو يعرف مدى حقيقة تلك الوجوه، عدا أنه يرى جانبه الانساني في هذا الوجه، رأى جانبا منه خارج المعابد والمراقص والمسارح، في تلك اللحظة أراد ان يعرف أي الوجوه التي يراها كل ليلة ترنو إلى روحه، فأراد ان يدخل في غيبته الأولى ويعرف ماهية حضوره، هل حضوره هو حضور الجسد، ام حضور الحياة النابضة فيه؟ تراجع عن الفكرة سريعا عندما رأى حضوره في ذلك الوجه الجديد. ذكره ذلك الوجه بعمان في الصباح، تذكر تلك الملامح التي لم يعد بألفها، تذكر الابتسامة النقية الخالية من أي نشوة، إلا نشوة الحياة، تذكر أن عمان مدينة تحترف العشق، وتعلمه لأبنائها أبجدية حية، ينطقون بها ويفكرون من خلالها، تذكر أيضا ان عمان تصنع من العشق آيات من الفن والجمال والحرية ... والحب.

فقد لمس تلك الأبجدية يوما في عمان، في تلالها ، في بيوتها وأدارجها، لكنه لم يعش هذا الحب من قبل، لم يعرف تلك الرعشة اللذيذة التي تصيب الجسد، رعشة لم تعتريه من قبل، رغم كل ارتعاشات الرقص، ولأول مرة رأى نفسه بشرا عاديا لا يلتفت إليه أحد، أراد أن ينتمي في لحظة إلى تلك الحياة، أراد ان تذوب ملامحه في ملامح عمان اشتاق لها واشتاقات إليه، أراد ان يعيش صداقة تحت ضوء النهار، وليس في أروقة المراقص، وعتمة كواليس المسارح....
ورغم أنه أراد ذلك بقوة، تذكر أن هذا الوجه وأن عمّان لن تحتمل عبث جسده، فأدخل روحه في غيبة عميقة داخل جسده الراقص. ورغم ان غيبة روحه النقية لا زالت مستمرة إلا أن الحكاية قد لاتنتهي هنا، ولكن نهاية البوح عه الآن ينتهي هنا، غابت الروح، وظل الجسد يرقص ويقدم آيات جدية من الجمال، ولكنه ليس جماله الحقيقي.

في جريدة الغد يوم 27-10- 2008 نشرت مقالة عنوانها "حملة أمنية لمكافحة "المثليين" والقبض على 4 "شاذين جنسيا"" بقلم الصحفي موفق كمال. لقد أثرت فيّ هذه المقالة لعدة أسباب ولذلك قررت الرد عليها بأربع نقاط. الثلاثة الأوائل ترد على الأخطاء والتقارير غير الصحيحة في المقالة والنقطة الرابعة تشير إلى خطورة تجاهل الرد على هذه المقالة.
النقطة الأولى: الأخطاء المعلوماتية في مقالة السيد موفق كمال. 1. المثليين جنسياً ليسو "شاذيين جنسياً" فالشخص الشاذ جنسياً يكون يمارس الجنس مع الحيوانات على سبيل المثال. المثليين جنسياً أفراد في المجتمع ينشدون عاطفياً وجنسياً إلى أفراد من الجنس نفسه. 2. الكمين الذي يشير إليه السيد كمال ليس مخصصاً للإيقاع بالمثليين جنسيا، بل برجال مومس. 3. المثليين جنسياً في كل مكان (أنظروا نقطة 2 في النقطة التالية). فهم ليسوا فقط قرب احدى المستشفيات الخاصة، وداخل كوفي شوب في عمان الغربية، والساحة الهاشمية أو شارع الرينبو في جبل عمان، وشارع الثقافة في الشميساني. هم في كل مكان.4. هم يتجمعون في هذه الأماكن ليس "لممارسة الرذيلة" انما لأنهم بشر وكل البشر اجتماعيين بطبيعتهم ويحتاجون إلى بعضهم البعض.

النقطة الثانية: تصرفات الجهات الأمنية المذكورة. 1. تقديم النقود مقابل الجنس ليس كمينا للإيقاع بالمثليين جنسياً إنما برجال أو نساء مومس. 2. عدد المثليين جنسيا ليس في تزايد مستمر. هم موجوديين في كل مكان كما كانوا منذ بداية التاريخ. ونسبة المثليين جنسيا في أي مجتمع تكون من 1%-10% من عدد السكان. أي أن الأردن وطن ل 60,000-600,000 مثلي. 3. لا يمكن للمرء أن "يتجنب التعامل معهم" لانه من غير الممكن تفرقتهم عن غير المثليين، وقد يكون قارئ هذه المقالة مثلي.

النقظة الثالثة: الدكتور محمد الحباشنة. 1. مشكلة التعميم المبالغ به بأن وجود المثليين يعود إلى تعرضهم للاعتداءات الجنسية في الصغر. ان التعرض للاعتداء الجنسي بالتأكيد يؤدي إلى أمراض نفسية مختلفة، ولكن المثلية ليست واحدة منها بما أن المثلية ليست بمرض نفسي حسب تعريف كل من منظمتي الطب النفسي والعلم النفسي الأمريكي ومجلة الطب النفسي البريطاني. 2. المثلية ليست ردة فعل لعدم وجود رمز رجولي قوي في الاسرة او تدليع الاسرة الزائد للذكور. لو كان التدليع سبب لجعل الفرد مثليا لكان كل رجال الأردن مثليين. 3. أهم المصادر في علم والطب النفسي (منظمتي الطب النفسي والعلم النفسي الأمريكي ومجلة الطب النفسي البريطاني) جميعها تدعو الأطباء وعلماء النفس ان تساند المثليين في بلادهم عن طريق القضاء على جميع القوانين التي تهدد المثليين والعمل على إزالة الإعتقادات الخاطئة عنهم في المجتمع. وكنت لأعتقد بأن شخصا يدعي المعرفة بموضوع المثليين والطب النفسي أن يكون أكثر مني معرفة بهذه المراجع وأن يعمل على دعم المثليين لا العمل ضدهم.

النقطة الرابعة: الخطر الذي يكمن في صمتي عن مقالة السيد توفيق كمال الصادرة في جريدة الغد يوم 27-10-2008. هذا الخطر ليس فقط لأن المقالة تهدد سلامة المثليين فقط إنما لأنها تهدد الحريات الخاصة مثل حرية الحياة المختلفة، حرية التعبير بشكل عام وحرية التعبير الشخصية بشكل خاص. وانا أؤمن أن صمتي اتجاه صحافة سيئة واتهامات بلا اساس يجعلني شريكة في هذه الجريمة وأني سأكون الضحية التالية. قريبا سيكتب عني الصحفي توفيق كمال، وستتهمني الجهات الأمنية المختلفة وتنصب لي كمينا وسأصبح محط تحليل نفسي جاهل من قبل الدكتور محمد الحباشنة. سأتهم أن شعري مجعد أكثر مما يجب وأن نظارتي بالغة البياض وأن أسمر مما يجب. ولكل الذين يعتقدون أن مقالة السيد توفيق لا تمسهم بأي شكل فتذكروا المثل "أكلت يوم أكل الثور الأبيض" واحنرسوا من صمتكم فقد تكونوا التالين.

This is about where we stand in hypocrisy and bigotry…and where we will be if we remain quiet.
Books@Cafe and many other establishments have been closed this week. Here is what I witnessed and what happened to us at Books@Cafe:
The night before Ramadan, the police violently stormed into the café and asked us to close down. “This is the holy month of Ramadan!” they barked. Since we are officially licensed and they could provide no official papers, we refused to close.

This is the third year we operate, fully licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and the Hotel and Restaurant Association. This is very important, because we are categorized as 3-star tourist, with recent faxes from the Ministry endorsing the permit to operate all day with regular food and drink service, including alcohol.

Last Wednesday, we hear that a security committee (Al lajna al amnia) has been formed and comprises of 3 groups: The Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Governate. All three must be present when this committee goes out to inspect.
That Wednesday night, the new committee barged into Books@Cafe (making sure every one saw them) and bullying everyone with their looks and comments.
They then walked into the kitchen while many of us including my brother were standing and witnessing.
One person proceeds to tell our chef that there are cockroaches, insects, mice in the kitchen. Every one was baffled and were telling him to show us what he was talking about! Of course there was nothing, but with every accusation, he ordered one of his committee members to write it down and then adds, “let them get what they deserve for serving alcohol in this holy month.”

Our chef kept asking the guy to show him where he saw cockroaches, mice, however the inspector was not there to listen; he was just there to write us up and penalize us.

Despite the fact that only representatives from the Ministry and the Governate were there - no one from the Hotel and Restaurant Association. The guy then tells us we should not be serving alcohol on the terrace; we immediately pulled all liquor sales indoors.
Sunday night, we get shocked with the visit from the police with an order to close. There was no reason within the order. Of course, they only come at night so that there is no one to call or anything to do.
When we showed them our papers, they kept calling us a night club. We are licensed as a restaurant. To them, if alcohol is served, then it is a night club. This is the logic we encountered, regardless of the fully accredited and legal license.
To our shock, the order started with the same Ministry of Tourism representative who received us like we were dirt at the ministry.
He had sent a document with 18 accusations at us including the basic cockroaches, insects etc. Including another accusation “jalsat 7ameema wa tabadol al qubal.” Roughly translated into “intimate gatherings and exchange of kissing.” He also mentions that someone told him to go and form his prayer ablutions with beer! The document stated that this was all happening on the terrace, in public and in front of us and everyone! The guy was lying through his teeth!
For now Books@Cafe is closed.

We are trying to get the license to reopen and have to send a “ister7am” as in begging for mercy for something we were legally doing and licensed by our ministry to do. To date the Ministry of Tourism and the Hotel and Restaurant Association have done nothing. The star rating system they have created has no value or protection.

Any comments on our system? Do we pay a rashwa to get things done or do we fight to make Jordan and our system fully protect our rights? Or do we just close up and leave the country and lose all our love and loyalty to Jordan? I prefer to fight for a better Jordan and I think everyone should do the same. This is my country and I live in it and I will contribute to a better Jordan.

UPDATE: The ministry has a list of 60 places recently closed. Cupid Cafe, Irish Pub and others are included.

Hello again,

in this post you'll find the first step of this collaborative project of Md.Abu Naser Robii the participant from Bangladesh in Shatana and myself,

its a video installation about a very famous poem by the traditional Bangalee poet Kazi Nazrul Islam,

Shatana International artist workshop 2008

Traveling from Al-Hoson west through a vast deep quarry -probably one of the largest in Middle East – The road rises from this rocky moonscape into a very pleasant magical hilly area, suddenly you find yourself two steps away from in a small but beautiful, artistic peaceful village of Shatana surrounded by olive grooves

I got to this slot of heaven on earth like two weeks ago and I felt like I never want to go back to the noise of the Amman,
but here I am, back to Amman, infront of a screen again…thought I share this feeling

The scent of Oak trees, birds singing, intense feelings all together sort of knocks you down the moment you take your first walk around the narrow streets of this lovely place and leaves you with an urge to step up, love, and most of all fills you with creativity to just stand at the top of the mountain and scream out loud with whatever that’s on your mind, never caring about any rules, relgions, traditions whatsoever!

I do not know if it’s just me being deadly romantic or it’s really that this place has certain magic that’s seriously captivating?! It’s really funny how a person reacts to a certain existence, space or attribute, or it’s probably cause working its way around focusing at the emptiness you never knew its there in the fuzz of our crazy daily routine…like experiencing love-sickness, dislocation and

I have always believed in the power of Mother Nature, divine interventions and the level of spirituality a person connects to in such an atmosphere, much like a virgin being touched for the first time by a beloved yet it’s a platonic sensation ! * Irrelevant I know but this is how I feel, eh! *

And last but not least and one of the most important part of my staying here is the outstanding group am with…we haven’t known each other for so long but damn they feel like my family, the super sweet and genuine moments we spent together is just out of words, the love you feel in the air leaves you speechless! I have no idea how am to fit again in the artificial life of Amman !?!? well you all know how much I love Amman so this is why am speechless !

Anyhow…I’ll above some pictures of the open day (Which was the last day of the residency, Friday the 18th) it was an amazing day we had…The villagers, the visitors, the artists and the organizers were all one big family… for those who came thanks a lot, and those who did not I like to say “You missed a lot!!”

Till I was drastically exposed to a very delicate , artistic yet impressive and strong idea of an outstanding lady, Diala Khasawnih ; she's an inspiring artist with all the word can possibly hold meanings, she was a resident at "Makan-house of expression : Best destination as an open space to express, develop and freely speak up , That's Ola Al-Khaldi's -who is another amazing inspiration and influence- idea of opening Makan"

"Working on her project " First Bra boutique " that was the turning point for me...The exposure to Bras as a symbol of "LADIES" and getting to understand the ideas of intimacy, sensitivity and depth a lady holds with her bra was really overwhelming for me as a young man with Anti-Feminism tendencies !

The fragile, sacred bonds that's various between every lady and how she connects to her body, personality and sexuality made me deeply think and try to analyze how a woman feels... and in the end of the day i came to the conclusion that i was absolutely unfair and ignorant holding up to my oriental macho understandings towards females...

Diala's exhibit that is still running in Makan till the 4th of June is a collection of installations ( Bras, items , stories, experiences ) its really a must go through experience .

All in all, I'd like to highly recommend this exhibit for its psychological, emotional and social depths and thank Diala,Ola and everybody else who made this experience possible

THE DAISIES, yes the daisies!

For ages and ages, those incredible creatures managed to keep the spirit of love, hope & freedom going…Just like a fairy tale character always does

Till one day, there was no heavenly music, no magic in the air…

There was no Daisies parade...

*Unusual silence*

Weird emptiness,

The popular daisies are reformed and recreated in extra ordinary colors, and acts You never though that could ever be...

But yes, the daisies were mourning...

Now, they silently started to whisper a sad riddle to the universe,
Some sort of a riddle in which you feel some elevated agony and longing...
You'll feel the loss of feelings,
And what is a daisy but her feelings?

*And the pained voices broke the awkward silence of the early sunset as follows*

Mixing and matching,
Twisting and turning,

Hoping and praying,
Dreaming and considering,

Never knowing yet always knowing,
Wanting to, yet not wanting to,

Mixing his heart,
Matching his soul to kings,

Thinking it was over,
Wishing that it wasn't,

Never knowing if it's true,
Always knowing that it's there.

Wanting to live in the light,
Yet not wanting the light to come,

Remembering what he used to feel,
Can it come back if he prays so?

فأنا مَنْ باعَ الهَوىْ لِلسائلاتِ

عَنْ حُبٍ ما عَرِفتهُ السماءُ

وَعنْ مَدينةٍ إسمُها عمان

كانتْ مَنبعَ الحُبِ والضياء

أما أنا يا سادتي فكُنتُ عُصفوراً

يَرقُصُ مَعيْ اللَحنُ والغِناءُ

أعزِفُ أجملَ سِيمفونية حُبٍ

تَهتزُ لَها النُفوسُ والأهواءُ

وَالحُزنُ قدْ أتانيْ علىْ غَفلةٍ

فتَحوَلَ الشِعرُ وتَحولَتْ الأشياءُ

فلا نِسرينُ تَردُ على نِدائي

إنْ ضَحكتِ غارَتْ مِنكِ السَماءُ

فَالنَهدُ أقسمَ ألا يَبتسمْ

والهوىْ قتلتهُ العَواصِفُ الهَوجاءُ

فلا تُناديْ عَلينا يا عَمانُ

لَقدْ مَاتتْ المُروءاتُ فِينا

وَبَقتْ على الأرضْ نِساءُ
نحنُ مَنْ رَفضنا عَمانَ قصيدةً

وَرَفضنا الشِعرَ حَتى لوْ كانَ

دُمية ليسَ لها مُستقبلٌ أو أهواءُ

وَنَرفضُ الشِعرَ بَهلواناً

يَتسَلىْ لِضَحكِهِ الأمراءُ

فَلَكمْ مِنْ نَهدٍ في ساحَةِ الشِعرِ قَتيلُ

بسَكاكينِ غَدرٍ لا تِعرفُ إلا البَغاءُ

وَالشِعرُ مَاذا سَيظلُ مِنْ عَراقتِهِ

إذا قادَهُ النِفاقُ والأغبياءُ

لا تَحزَنيْ يا عَمانُ

فقدْ أصابَنا الكُرهُ

وَقلَ فِينا الفَرحُ

حَتى ماتَ فِينا الحَياءُ

مَنْ إستشهَدوا فقدْ إستشهَدوا

وَمنْ عاشوا

أينَ هُمُ الأحياءُ؟

هَلْ لا زالَتْ فِينا كَراماتُ قُريشٍ؟

أمْ أننا ما زِلنا بُخلاءُ؟

وَهلْ ينسَىْ النهدُ نَقشَ أحرُفي
أمْ أنَ آذانُهُ صَماءُ؟

إني أشكو إليكِ حُزني يا عَمانُ

فكَيفَ أشكُوْ وَفيْ فمِيْ مَاءُ

وَشِعريْ تَخيطُهُ الأحزانُ السَوداءُ

يا أيُها العَروسُ لا تبكِيْ

قُتِلَتْ لأجلِكِ كُلَ زَهرةً

وَناحَتْ عليكِ جَرشٌ والبَتراءُ

في الشَمالِ أتوكِ جاثِمينَ

بِحُزنِ فَجرَتهُ الدِماءُ

وَالقدسُ لا زَالَتْ باكيةً

يَتسَلىْ لِبُكائِها الأعداءُ

وَالنِيلُ أعلَنَ حِدادَهُ في كُلِ رافِدٍ

حَتى الروافِدُ كُلُها إزدِراءُ

يا عمان قدْ مَلِلتُ مِنُ الحُزنِ

كَما يَملُ الجَسدُ والرِداءُ

يا عَمان قدْ فاضَ دَمعيْ نهراً

أليسَ النهرُ فيْ الصَحراءِ إحياءُ؟

بَكينا وَبكينا عليكِ يا عَمانُ

إني أعترِفُ لَكمُ أنَ شِعريء شَيطانيٌ

فِيْ زَمنٍ قَلَ فِيهِ الشُعراءُ

وَقصائِديْ ما كانَتْ كاذبةَ

لأنَ الكَذبَ نِهايَتهُ الإستِياءُ

شِعريْ لِوَطنيْ وَالنِساءِ والعِشقِ

وَلَستُ أباليْ رَفضتَهُ أمْ بارَكتهُ السَماءُ

الى متى ستظل ترى أجزاء صغيرة و تنسى الصورة الكبيرة ؟

Even "the small part of the picture" you see it through a borrowed lens

حاول ان تنسى المسلمات,و ترى الصورة بأفق ابعد

...so you can tell,that we're so much more than meets the eye

حاول,حتى تدرك ان الأنسان هو اكثر من ما تراه الأعين ..

The whole point of this is to send a message,nothing proffesional but i bet its SPECIAL !through My windows movie maker,my personal camera andthe heavinly piece of music by RUM-Tarek Al-Naser (from www.rummusic.com)i was able to pull this together...its the start of something...but i still need the support and the experience to go on and complete my vision...and THE SHOW MUST GO ON..stay tuned for more
